In a world where there are so many guidelines and so many rules to abide by, we unknowingly become our worst judge. We secretly and often time unconsciously see ourselves at fault. Why do we do that you may ask? Why do we prematurely condemn ourselves? Simply to be prepared into accepting the world’s sentence.

We often forget to live by reminiscing what has been and torturing ourselves imagining what could have been all the while blindly spilling the honey pot of the present that we each are carrying. A lot of us fail to remember that we grow everyday and that it is perfectly fine to look back and see other ways, better ways and better outcomes. We need to learn to love ourselves, enjoy life, change, grow and most importantly take a deep breath, break the cycle and give ourselves a break.

The following poem “Give yourself a break” was written because I needed a reminder for indefinite self-love. It is a warm encouragement to myself and to you on how well we all have bravely done so far in our lives regardless of what others and mostly ourselves might have thought.

Give yourself a break

For looking in the rear-view mirror of your short life
Bring tears to the one true window of your soul
While there is so much to live for, even in the afterlife
Give yourself a break

For you are reaping the fruits of choices made years ago
Green or ripe, sweet or sour, they all played a role
In mothering and nurturing the fountain of your unique glow
Give yourself a break

For all the time that you have condemned yourself to death
Over foolishness or stupidity or innocence or love
They are all pieces of the best version of you, take a deep breath
Give yourself a break

For today’s knowledge and certainty being your invincible shield
You will again bet on it, fighting hot or cold without glove
Stubborn and with fervor just like in the past on life’s battlefield
Give yourself a break

Embrace life and its perks in all their beauty and twist
Be hard on yourself if you must, but at loving you
Smile when you are alone like the lover after being kissed
Give yourself a break

Lend a hand to yourself and pull your best self up to the throne
No need for magic because the power has always been in you
And for you are unique and beautiful and never will be a clone
Give yourself a break

If you see a little bit of yourself through those words, may you find the strength to “Give yourself a break”. Find ways to enjoy your best life because you have done a lot, have been through so much already, yet you have so much more to accomplish.
