40 Years, 40 Lessons: Reflections on Growth, Faith & Love

Turning 40 years and 40 days old might seem like just another moment in an ordinary week, but this past year has been anything but ordinary.
It led me into 40 lessons shaped by reflection, personal growth, healing, faith, and a deeper understanding of love, motherhood, boundaries, and becoming.

A lot has happened. Some things I saw coming, many I didn’t, and some I’m still figuring out. Life keeps moving and changing, teaching me quietly as I try to keep up. And somewhere in between all of that, I’ve grown to embrace slowing down a little more; not rushing to define every season while still in it.

I don’t feel like I’ve arrived anywhere. But I do feel more present in my own life than I used to be.

More honest.

A little more grounded in what actually matters and what doesn’t need to come with me anymore.

I’ve also been learning to care for myself differently, my health, my emotions, my capacity. Listening when my body says “enough,” instead of pushing past it. Realizing that taking care of myself isn’t selfish… It’s necessary… for everything and everyone I love.

I’ve learned that love stretches you in ways you don’t always have words for. It’s not just sacrifices, as people say. It’s also joy, presence, and a kind of strength you only understand by living it. My children, my love, my passions, and my community have shaped me just as much as I’ve shaped them.

And love, in all its forms, has been a teacher too. Not just romantic or family love, but the way I show up for myself. Learning that self-love is not indulgence, it’s stewardship of the life God has entrusted to me.

Faith has been steady in the background of it all. Not always loud, not always perfectly formed, but present. A quiet reminder that my worth is not something I have to prove, but something I’ve already been given. That in Christ, I carry dignity even on days when I feel uncertain, unworthy, tired, or in between.

So instead of trying to sum up the year, I wanted to mark this moment differently.

With 40 lessons, fragments of becoming, learning, unlearning, and living. Not as a checklist, but as lived truth.

Lessons on Personal Growth & Becoming

  1. Becoming has its own timing; it’s a journey.
  2. You are allowed to start over more than once.
  3. Personal growth is often found in quiet seasons.
  4. You can outgrow something and still be grateful for it.
  5. Small, consistent steps shape your life more than perfect ones.
  6. Silence brings clarity when you step back long enough to hear yourself.
  7. You don’t need approval to keep becoming.
  8. Sometimes growth looks like doing less, not more.

Lessons on Letting Go

  1. Some endings are quiet blessings, even when they feel like a loss.
  2. Not everything or everyone is meant to stay in your life.
  3. What drains you is information, not failure.
  4. Letting go is choosing what no longer fits who you are becoming
  5. No creates the right space.
  6. Grief can also exist in the right decisions.
  7. You don’t need closure to move forward.
  8. Letting go is self-love and self-respect in action.

Lessons on Peace, Presence & Health

  1. Peace is a practice, not something you find.
  2. Rest is a need, not a reward.
  3. Your health shapes how you show up for yourself and others; listen to it.
  4. Slowing down is often where real presence deepens.
  5. Peace grows when you stop reacting to everything around you
  6. Being present is a quiet and powerful kind of success, different from being there
  7. The way you care for yourself shows up in every part of your life.
  8. You don’t have to push through everything to prove you’re strong.

Lessons on Faith, Self-trust, & Boundaries

  1. You don’t need to explain every decision.
  2. Your intuition is worth trusting, even when it’s quiet.
  3. Faith steadies uncertainty; it anchors you in what you cannot see.
  4. Your identity in Christ gives you a dignity that does not shift with circumstances.
  5. Boundaries are self-respect; they protect your energy and your relationships.
  6. Not everyone will understand you, and that’s okay.
  7. You can respond differently now than you used to
  8. Protecting your energy is honoring life, yours and others.

Lessons on Love, Family & Perspective

  1. Love stretches you in ways comfort never will, and it calls you outward into patience, service, and presence.
  2. Motherhood teaches you strength and softness at once. Love is lived daily, not just felt.
  3. Community doesn’t just support you, it shapes you and invites you to show up more fully for others.
  4. You can love deeply and still need space; saying no can be part of that.
  5. Family isn’t perfect, it is sacred, and chosen beyond blood
  6. Comparison is a poison; it takes you out of your own life and isolates.
  7. You can be grateful and still desire more for your life.
  8. Pouring into yourself and others is essential to continuing to keep growing, still becoming.

These 40 lessons are not a list of achievements.
It’s just a reflection of the years that shaped me in quiet, deep, and unexpected ways.

I don’t feel like I’ve reached some final version of myself, and maybe I’m not supposed to.

But I do feel more here than I used to be.

More anchored in faith.
More aware of love in its many forms.
More honest with myself, even when it’s uncomfortable.
More grateful for a life that’s still unfolding, still teaching me.

And for now, that feels like enough.

40 years. 40 days. 40 lessons. Still becoming.

  1. Oh, I so love this post so much. I love every lesson and reflection on growth. As we get older things really do come into perspective and for me, I’ve learned a lot of the same things.

    1. Lisa,
Thank you so much for this. 💛
I think that’s one of the gifts of getting older, things start making sense in ways they never did before. I’m so glad this connected with your own journey too.

  2. I really love this one. It’s such a powerful affirmation of the wisdom that comes with living and seeking Him.

    1. Beth,
It’s amazing how much clarity comes with time, growth, and keeping our hearts turned toward Him. I’m so glad this spoke to you.

There are some real gems here. You’re so lucky to have experience so much and been able to take lessons from it. Especially the one about boundaries being a form of self-care. I’m in my 30s and I’m still learning this.

    1. Andreia,
      Thank you. 💛
That lesson took me a long time to truly understand, and if I’m honest, I’m still growing in it. The beautiful part is that awareness is already growth, you’re learning it right on time.

Your reflections carry so much warmth, wisdom, and faith. Beautiful reminders that growth, love, and grace deepen with every passing season.

    1. Jerry,
      Thank you so much. 💛
I definitely don’t have it all figured out, but I’m learning to trust the growth and grace God offers in each season. I’m grateful this connected with you.

  5. I’m loving all your lessons here. Are you turning these into a book? Would be interesting to hear the stories behind each of your lessons. I run a storytelling website called Daily Inspired Life. The topics you cover are popular in our community. If ever you wanted to share a story we’d love to hear it.

    1. Karletta,
Thank you so much for this encouragement. 💛
I’m not sure where it will all lead yet, but I’ve definitely been feeling pulled to explore the stories behind these lessons more deeply. I’d be open to connecting, and I really appreciate your invitation; Daily Inspired Life sounds like a beautiful space.
